چکیده

Milgram [1967] formulates the basic dimensions of the small-world problem in terms of a series of questions: (a) Given any two randomly chosen people in the world, what is the probability that they know each other? (b) If they don’t know each other, do they share a mutual acquaintance? (c) If they don’t share a mutual acquaintance, how many intermediate acquaintances, linked in a chain, are needed in order to connect them? To explore these dimensions, Milgram and various coauthors [see Milgram, 1967] conducted a series of observational experiments designed to trace the line of acquaintances linking a pair of individuals in distant cities. Each experiment began with the selection of a random sample of starting persons in one city (e.g. Omaha, Nebraska) and a target person in a remote city (e.g. Sharon, Massachusetts). Each starting person was given a packet, containing background information on the target, person, with instructions to send the packet to the target person only if he or she knew the target person on a first-name basis; otherwise, he should forward the packet to the acquaintance whom he thinks would be most likely to know the target. Each recipient of the packet was instructed to send a postcard informing the experimenter to whom the packet had been forwarded. This device allowed the experimenter to keep track of all the intermediate steps of each chain. Therefore, each chain could be completed in only two ways: either the packet was received by the target person or it was discarded at an intermediate step. All of the small-world experiments carried out by Milgram share two features: a large percentage of dropouts and a small median number of

Random matrix analysis of network Laplacians

We analyze eigenvalues fluctuations of the Laplacian of various networks under the random matrix theory framework. Analyses of random networks, scale-free networks and small-world networks show that nearest neighbor spacing distribution of the Laplacian of these networks follow Gaussian orthogonal ensemble statistics of random matrix theory. Furthermore, we study nearest neighbor spacing distri...

Dynamic, small-world social network generation through local agent interactions

To model agent relationships in agent-based models, it is often necessary to incorporate a social network whose topology is commonly assumed to be “small-world”. This is potentially problematic, as the classification is broad and covers a widerange of network statistics. Furthermore, real networks are often dynamic, in that edges and nodes can appear or disappear, and spatial, in that connectio...

Small worlds: Modeling attitudes toward sources of uncertainty

We introduce the concept of a conditional small world event domain—an extension of Savage’s [The Foundations of Statistics, Wiley, NewYork, 1954] notion of a ‘small world’—as a self-contained collection of comparable events. Under weak behavioral conditions we demonstrate probabilistic sophistication in any small world event domain without relying on monotonicity or continuity. Probabilistic so...

Small-world Structure in Children’s Featured Semantic Networks

Background: Knowing the development pattern of children’s language is applicable in developmental psychology. Network models of language are helpful for the identification of these patterns.  Objectives: We examined the small-world properties of featured semantic networks of developing children. Materials & Methods: In this longitudinal study, the featured semantic networks of children aged 1...

Dynamics of Geographical Routing in Small-World Networks

A graph exhibits the small-world phenomenon if most nodes can be reached through a short chain of steps along the edges. Current small-world models include those based on a simple base graph structure, which is augmented with shortcuts added according to some random process. We examined the small-world graph models mentioned above with variable population density through computer simulations. F...
